Spectrum of Light began in 2022 as a small high school club in Lexington, Kentucky. At the time, it wasn’t a nonprofit, a national movement, or a formal organization — it was simply a group of students who believed their school could be more inclusive, more accessible, and more welcoming for students with disabilities.
What started as a student‑led effort to raise awareness and build understanding quickly grew into something bigger. Students wanted to learn more, teachers wanted to support, and families wanted to get involved. The club’s message, that every student deserves to belong, resonated far beyond one school.
As interest grew, so did the vision. Spectrum of Light expanded its activities, created leadership roles, developed educational materials, and began shaping what would eventually become a national model for youth‑driven disability inclusion.
By 2026, the movement had outgrown its beginnings. To support more students, build more chapters, and create lasting impact, Spectrum of Light formally incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This milestone transformed a student club into a national organization with the structure, resources, and mission needed to reach youth across the country.
Today, Spectrum of Light continues to honor its roots: student‑led, community‑focused, and driven by the belief that inclusion is not just a goal — it’s a culture. What began in one high school now empowers students nationwide to enlighten, advocate and to promote inclusion and lead change in their own communities.
